How are dive watches waterproof?

Dive watches are specially designed to be waterproof and withstand the pressures of being submerged underwater. They have several features that contribute to their waterproofing:

  1. Screw-down crown: The crown (the knob used for setting the time) is often threaded and needs to be screwed tightly into the case to create a watertight seal. This prevents water from seeping in through the vulnerable point of entry.

2.Case construction: Dive watches typically have robust case constructions made from materials like stainless steel or titanium. The cases are engineered to withstand high pressure and have reinforced seals to keep water out.

3.Seals and gaskets: Special gaskets and seals made of rubber or other materials are placed at critical points, such as around the case back, crown, and crystal, to prevent water from entering the watch.

4.Sapphire or mineral crystal: The watch face is often made from sapphire or mineral crystal, materials known for their strength and resistance to scratches and cracks. They are also sealed into the watch case to prevent water infiltration.

5.Pressure testing: Before being sold, dive watches undergo rigorous pressure testing to ensure they meet specific depth ratings. This testing verifies that the watch can withstand the pressures at certain depths without leaking.

6.Specially designed components: The internal components of dive watches, such as the movement and other mechanisms, are often designed to be more resistant to water damage. They may be coated or treated to repel moisture and prevent corrosion.
